Subject: GISList: RE: MI-L World Time Zones
Date:  03/18/2002 06:33:06 AM
From:  Warren Vick, Europa Technologies Ltd.

Hello Lyn,

A late reply as I've just returned from a vacation.

We have a time zone data set under our Map Elements product range. Full
information at http://www.europa-tech.com

With more-or-less any GIS software, you can easily group together the bands
of countries/regions which make up each time zone. This will remove
political borders between countries/regions in the same zone. You then have
to decide how you want to handle the sea areas. Some time zones maps make
bold divisions around small islands for clarity, or you could just use the
15degree strips which equate to each zone (this simple layer is also in the
Map Elements - Time Zone data set).

One important point when choosing a data set... if the time zone data is
based on a political map of the world, is this up to date? So many companies
pick up free or shareware data thinking that it is sufficient for the job
and inadvertently associate their businesses with an out-of-date or
controversial view of the world (as Microsoft recently found with MapPoint
2002).

Regards,
Warren Vick

Thank you all who have forwarded sources or data for
the World Time Zones. However, of the many I have
recieved, none yet have exactly what I need.
The important aspect of the data is to be able to
display or view the zone boundary lines themselves on
the map. Of all the sources found, the map displayes
the countries with no lines running from the top to
bottom of the map. I need those lines and the format
needs to be TAB or SHP so I can bring it in to the
software and create a .wmf.
Not asking for much, am I?!?
