I would suggest either the Garmin or Magellan handheld. There are several
models each with 12-channel reception, NMEA standard output, and capable of
real-time differential accuracies via WAAS and/or RTCM corrections. Most
models are quite sophisticated with built-in navigation to point of interest
plus normal save-a-(way)point or maintain a trace. Some models include
compass and altimeter for the mountain-goat-types. The Garmin software
seems a bit more cooperative as regards placing other sources of maps into
its very ample map-memory stacks.

The competition between Magellan and Gramin is quite fierce and as a result
your get a very good value. Make certain you get a USB cable and extension
antenna!

Lastly, if you want the expensive old reliable and master of perfection
handheld consider Trimble's Pathfinder which has the ability to provided
corrected position to sub-meter accuracies...

These handheld GPS units are great devices - small, very reliable, and
accurate to +/- 12 meters without correction and within two meters with.
There a number of "share" and "free" wares that can be found on our list's
host site that will help you import and mange these "mission" files in your
GIS - MapInfo, ESRI, Manifold, and others. You might also have interest in
the geo-positioning of any digital photos taken in sync with one of these
handhelds go to - http://www.mediamapper.com
