Subject: RE: GISList: whole earth DEM needed
Date:  03/27/2002 05:36:33 PM
From:  Todd Helt

Silvere,

The GTOPO30 site (see link below) is definitely still up, but I have no idea
why you can't access it from your home in France.

You can also purchase the GTOPO30 data from USGS on CD-ROM media for $10 per
CD x 5 CD's.

Here's contact info for ordering data:

EDC DAAC User Services
EROS Data Center
Voice: (605) 594-6116
Fax: (605) 594-6963
E-mail: edc@eos.nasa.gov

I wouldn't recommend holding your breath waiting for a new "near" global
elevation data set from NASA. If you are talking about the Shuttle Radar
Topography Mission (http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/dataprod.htm), here's some
idea of what to expect (quote from NASA-JPL's website):

"Ultimately, the final released SRTM Digital Elevation Models will be at 30
meters for the United States and at 90 meters for the rest of the world,
although NASA and NIMA are still discussing these issues"

Only some data samples have been released so far, and as I understand it
none of these are considered final products. I am not aware of the schedule
for release or distribution of any of the SRTM products.

If I am wrong about this, somebody please correct me and shed some light on
the subject.

Todd
