Subject: Re: GISList: Garmin GPS & ArcView 3.1

With ref to altitude - *no* GPS does it particularly well (if you're
interested in height above MSL or whatever), as they give you height above
the spheroid, not height above the geoid. If I wanted an accurate measure
of altitude, I'd be more inclined to use a barometer (a bit old-fashioned)
or level in to the point from a bench mark (rather expensive).

If I was buying a GPS today I'd make sure it had WAAS capability. WAAS will
provied you much better accuracy. The eTrex Venture (+$50 SRP from the
basic
eTrex - $170 steet) has WAAS and better capacity than the basic eTrex unit.
Either eTrex basic model is good enough to support the usage you outlined -
both will keep you on this planet, no problem! Neither of these eTrex units
supports an external antenna, which is about the only downside I can see to
the units.

I don't know if the WAAS units will do altitude any better, the non-WAAS
recreational units don't do altitude very well. There are some Garmin units
that include barometric altimiters - pricey however.

Make sure you get the combined power/PC cable with the Garmins.

There is a nice freeware package Waypoints+ that is great for
upload/download to most any (I think the eTrex line is supported)Garmin.
Just make sure you have the correct datum set in the GPS to match your topo
(usually NAD27) overlay project.
