Subject: RE: GISList: Image analysis tools
Date:  05/06/2002 09:53:05 AM
From:  Ulliman, Mark

You might take a look at the following 2 programs...=20

(1) MultiSpec - MultiSpec is being developed at Purdue University, West
Lafayette, IN, by David Landgrebe and Larry Biehl from the School of
Electrical and Computer Engineering and LARS. It results from an on-going
multiyear research effort which is intended to define robust and
fundamentally based technology for analyzing multispectral and hyperspectral
image data, and to transfer this technology to the user community in as
rapid a manner as possible. The results of the research are implemented into
MultiSpec and made available to the user community via the download pages.
MultiSpec=A9 with its documentation=A9 is distributed without charge.

(2) Grass - GRASS GIS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) is an
open source, free software Geographical Information System (GIS) with
raster, topological vector, image processing, and graphics production
functionality that operates on various platforms through a graphical user
interface and shell in X-Windows. It is released under GNU General Public
License (GPL).

I am in the process of developing an Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing
course for a Professional GIS Certificte program. I am looking for free
or demo versions of software that have some image analysis capabilities
in them. I am familiar with a variety such as ENVI, Imagine, Idrisi,
and ESRI/ERDAS's Image Analysis extension for ArcView.

Is anyone aware of free or demo versions of software that would work
for teaching a short (3 day) course on some basic image analysis
proceedures?
