Subject: RE: GISList: Image analysis tools

There is also a good on-line Integrated RS/GIS resource that may be of use
in your course.

Take a look at the Boston Internet RS/GIS at the David Rumsey Collection at
www.davidrumsey.com/gis

This is free public access Internet RS/GIS that allows Web browser-based
users to perform basic image processing functions such as blend/fade and
merge images, change RGB band combinations, perform image stretches
(standard deviation, min-max, histogram equalization), and save and download
the results as georeferenced images. The site also has fully integrated
vector GIS tools as well. It definitely is not a desktop image processing
package, as all operations are performed only on the portion of the image
displayed in the viewer (optimized for Internet deployment) and the
geospatial data is all accessed from the server (powered by ArcIMS and
Maplicity). Also, more processor intensive tasks like isodata clustering or
rectification are not supported. But for many users or application the
basic image visualization and enhancements capabilities may be acceptable.

Also, since it is web browser-based, there is no additional sys admin
related to installing and configuring the desktop image processing software.
Internet RS/GIS means that it is ready to go for distance education or as a
take home or lab assignment as long as the students have access to a good
Internet connection. If you are able to use the datasets available on the
David Rumsey site in your course, you don't need to worry about database
development either. Right now that means just Boston and San Francisco, but
the Washington DC metro area will be on-line within the next month. NYC,
LA, Chicago, Denver, and Seattle are also in the works for later this year.

Datasets currently available for Boston include 1987 and 2000 Landsat TM
(RGB 453), 2000 Landsat TM (Pan), 2000 Landsat TM (RGB 321), DOQ's, DRG's,
Hillshaded Relief, 18 historical maps from 1776-1900, and vectors for
detailed streets, roads, lakes, parks, and boundaries.
