Subject: GISList: Downloading DRG from GIS data depot
Date:  05/06/2002 09:53:08 AM
From:  Randy O'Boyle

When did the GIS Data Depot switch to requiring subscription to their
"premium" lines for downloading USGS DRGs? I just tried to download a DRG
and found the free download option removed.

I thought this stuff was supposed to be distributed for free!!

What are some other locations that USGS DRGs can be downloaded for free?

Randy

My feeling is that an automatic process for this conversion would be
difficult-to-impossible, as Avenue and VB exemplify two quite different
programming paradigms (VB is basically an imperative, rather than an object
oriented, language, even though it uses objects). If you want to re-use
your Avenue programs, you'll need to rewrite them in VB (or pay someone
else to do it).

Hi,

My interpretation of the website: "There is
no utility to port existing Avenue code to Visual Basic for use in ArcView
8.1.'." meant that they had developed Jumpstart to solve an existing
problem. The website also states: "Now is the time to port your ArcView
3.x applications to the great new ArcView 8.1 functionality"

My point is, if this company has developed such a utility, then a porting
procedure is possible (don't ask me how!).

Kind Regards

Dan

G'day everyone,

I just checked out the www.matrixr.com site and have to confess that I've
jumped the gun with the message about 'Jumpstart'. It cannot automatically
port Avenue to VBA. Rather it is a service provided by Matrixr to convert
Avenue to VBA. The info on 'Jumpstart' is at
http://www.matrixr.com/pages/consulting_a.html. This info states 'There is
no utility to port existing Avenue code to Visual Basic for use in ArcView
8.1.'.

I should have checked the site myself before forwarding the message -
sorry.

Porting Avenue scripts to VBA for ArcGIS may be possible!

The below message from GISLIST suggests that 'Jumpstart' may be able to do
it. I haven't checked out the site, but it's worth a look.

Hi,

Matrix Research (www.matrixr.com) have developed an application called
'Jumpstart', which ports Avenue code in ArcView 3.x to VBA code in ArcGIS.
There are probably other companies that have developed similar
applications.
