Subject: GISList: SUM - DATA - streets data
Date:  05/06/2002 01:23:31 PM
From:  Josephine Burns

Thanks to Alex Rodriguez, Scott Bigelow, Matt Stull, Ted Florence, and Gary
Young for their responses.

The general consensus was that none of the data was as perfect as the glossies
would like you to think (no big surprise there.) In particular, rural areas
are full of inaccuracies, since the data companies devote their resources to
improving urban areas where most of their customers want data.

For cartographic quality, the scales tipped slightly in favor of
Etak/TeleAtlas.

Full text of responses is included below.

Hello Josephine,
I work for KBHOME here in Dallas. We purchased GDT road data two years ago
for a GIS project. For the most part everything lines up nicely from far
away. When you zoom in the flaws start to show up. The main problem is the
correct alignment of the roads. I have corrected these problems manually
when needed and in the long run it is not a big deal. It's just my only
complaint.
Thanks and good luck,
Scott B.

NavTech has the most accurate streets data, Etak has good geometry in their
streets. NavTech has the best navigation coverage. GDT has the best
addressing of any streets data. So if you want navigation go NavTech,
addressing go GDT or cartographic quality - Etak. I used to work a lot with
NavTech data. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for US street data you may also want to consider the
MAPdataUSA set of 19 CD's.
See http://www.avenza.com/products.mapdata.html for more details.

I have 'test driven' both GDT and TeleAtlas. They seem to be spending their
money updating only (or mostly) the urban areas
where their payback is larger. In the rural intermountain west where I need
road data (just road alignment, not even
addresses) they are both very out of data (10 - 15 yrs) and have many old
roads missing, and roads showing where a road has
never existed.

I will be testing NavTech late this summer. They said they will be updating my
area by then. I am hoping, but I am not
holding my breath, they will be any better.

Sorry if this is bad news.

Gary
