Dear Listers, thanks to everybody who responded, and sorry for the delay in summing. This was my original question: ------------------------- For an anthropological study on settlement structures on the Kenyan shores of lake Victoria we need high resolution imagery on which it is possible to recognize single huts. I have made a couple of Google searches using various keywords, but have not come accross anything that helped to find a source for this kind of imagery. I would be most grateful if someone could hint me to a suppliers of such imagery. -------------------------
Regarding recent imagery, various people suggested IKONOS satellite imagery(www.spaceimaging.com), that is available at a resolution of down to 1meter. "Cost is approx. $50-60 per square kilometer with a minimum $2000 order. Scene size is 11km x 11km." when buying from ComputaMaps (http://www.computamaps.com). Other suggested sources were QuickBird imagery with 0.61m resolution (http://www.digitalglobe.com) and Russian satellite imagery (http://www.cartographic.com/satellite_imagery.asp), available at 2 and 5 meter resolution, which seems to be quite a lot cheaper than the above. Unfortunately the area that we need is only covered at 5 meter resolution, which is to course to identify huts.
As for historical data, there have been two aerial surveys that covered the whole of Kenya, one in 1949, and one in 1960 for Survey of Kenya, the Kenyan surveyor general. However, it was pointed out that it might be difficult to obtain the data.
Thanks again, Elmar
