thanks to Peter Demark, Mark Prins, Peter DHaeseleer, Brett Forbes, Craig von Hagen, Marc Jacquin, Dimitri Rotow and Calin for responding to my query. a bit surprising to learn that none of the webGIS applications i looked at help you track client's browsing habit. thanks, harsh
here is a summary of the responses: an essential resource- http://www.web-mapper.com/tech/internet/ brief list of webGIS applications- mapguide, arcims, mapserver (free!), geomedia webmap, manifold, maptitude, spatial fusion, mapextreme, spatial fx, beyondgeo, altamap.
** MapServer (the functionality seems to be there and it is free. one of the best free web mapping tool which has a very active mailing list. Main issue is the creation of an image of the map in GIF/JPEG/PNG and Mapserver is one of the best. And it's free ! Runs on Linux and Windows). http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/
** geomedia webmap http://www.intergraph.com/gis/gmwm/
** Manifold IMS (At $245 it includes not only a fast and powerful Internet map server, it also *includes* Manifold 5.00, the world's most sophisticated GIS. This allows creating cool web applications without programming using the totally WYSIWYG facilities of Manifold). http://www.manifold.net/
** Maptitude (handles ESRI Shapefiles, MapInfo TAB files, and Oracle Spatial tables in their native format, enables live access to the data, has Mapplications- web mapping templates. costs only $2995/first year and $995/additional years for unlimited numbers of users). http://www.caliper.com/webmaptitude.htm
** Spatial Fusion. http://www.spatialcomponents.com/SpatialFusion.html
** MapXtreme http://www.mapinfo.com
** SpatialFX http://www.objectfx.com
** BeyondGeo (not really a standalone web GIS, but more an ASP model for web GIS). http://www.bluemarblegeo.com
** AltaMap http://www.geomicro.com/index.htm
original query- hi, i am interested in learning about experiences that some of you might have had with 'webgis'. intergraph's geomedia webmap looks impressive- data can reside in native-source format, and it enables live access to the data.
do other applications (ims or mapguide) have the same (or better) functionality? could someone give a comparison for the 3 (inc. pricing, compatibility etc). thanks, hp
