I think you would be better off with two measurements - X,Y within the grid measured from a consistent corner. Using that method it will be much easier to "plot" the data. Accurate plotting would assume you have a good anchor point for your grid and that the gird cells are indeed exactly 2 meters.
I haven't done any surveys like this so I'm just guessing. I'm sure someone on the list will contribute the "correct" method.
A good model to start with would be UTM grids. Use the same origin corner to make things easy on the GIS side. An optimal grid for GIS use would be 10 meters, but that is probably too large for a plant survey.
Are you sure you will be plotting each stem? I would guess a count within each grid would statisfy most research issues.
