Here is a generalized summary of the responses I received:
Many of you out there are also interested in these programs. One listing of organizations offering online GIS education is at: http://spatialnews.geocomm.com/education/ . There are more online courses for certificates and the like than there are for advanced degrees.
A number of responses dealt with online vs. traditional education. If you thrive on face-to-face interaction with instructors and peers than online education is not for you. However it is worth noting that you will have ample opportunity to express yourself and discuss ideas using the written word via email/chat rooms (most online courses designate which language will be used). Many of the organizations offering these courses are traditional universities and online students seem to be welcome to visit and utilize resources if they wish. Clearly, the driving force behind online education is convenience. For many of us it is prohibitively inconvenient to quit our jobs and go back to school full-time.
(It was not my wish to spark a debate over traditional/online education. My sense is that just as with traditional schools your educational experience may vary with online courses. As far as specific critiques I received on existing online masters degree programs in GIS see below.)
I did receive some responses from those that are in an online Masters degree program. The comments were all positive. One responder did express some regret that her program did not cover programming. Most responders stressed that the student must be self-motivated due to the absence of a physical, university-type setting reminding them that they were in school as well as the presence day to day distractions that can be introduced by work and family. Generally speaking, the responders felt the instructors were knowledgeable, the course materials accessible (text lectures/journals/papers over the Web, text books via Amazon, etc.), and the content not software-specific. As far as some of these specifics go I should mention that most of the responders who have had actual experience were referring to the program offered by Birkbeck College, London UK. I did get one response from someone investigating a program offered by City University in London that is not listed in the web site above (www.soi.city.ac.uk./mgi).
I will re-sum if I get anything new. Good luck to all of you interested in this path. Don't be a fool, stay in school! One way or another, that is.
