If you are using ArcView 3.x, take a look at "XSect"at http://www.quantdec.com/software/xsect/index.htm . The user manual, available for download in pdf format, contains many illustrations based on actual data, which makes it easy to figure out whether you will get what you need out of this software. If it isn't exactly what you are looking for, that Web page also includes links to other cross-section software.
