Subject: GISList: ArcGIS - Geocoding - Address Standardization problem.
Date:  06/10/2002 07:58:41 AM
From:  GS.Rao .. lntinfotech.com

Dear Listers

We are facing a peculiar problem whilst doing geocoding with ArcGIS. The
problem relates to standardization
of addresses in ArcMap.

The Address standardization in ArcGIS is based on the classification
files found in the "Geocode" directory under the ARCHOME path. The
Geocoding locator (with the style "US Streets with Zone and Alternate
Names - Geodatabase") in ArcMap uses two files ? us_addr.cls and
us_intsc.cls.

We need help with two cases as given below.

An address which has "St" in the name, like "St Lawrence Rd"
This address is standardized as "Saint Lawrence Rd" whereas we would like
to retain it as "St."

An address that has a hyphen in the street name, like RTE 202-206.
This is standardized as "RTE 202". whereas we would like to retain the
original with the hyphen.

We have gone through all the classification files, but are not able to
identify from where ArcMAP is picking these rules.

Can someone give us some help.

Thanks in advance.
