Subject: GISList: the best interpolation method for DEM
Date:  06/10/2002 07:58:41 AM
From:  viktoras d

Hi !

I am looking for more opinions on this...
There was a description of an analysis of several interpolation methods best
suitable for DEMs (Juha Oksanen and Olli Jaakkola, 2000. Interpolation and
accuracy of contour-based raster DEMs. Reports of the Finish Geodetic
institute).
Generalized results were:
Iterative Medial Axis Interpolation (IMAI)- low computing cost but
noticeable deficiences of surface forms:

Linear Inverse Distance Interpolation from Contours (LIDIC)- the only method
which was found not to exceed acceptable 1.4 m random error and generates
the most realistic surface forms, but is slow:

Simple Iterative Filtering Interpolation (SIFI) - low computing cost, but
surface forms represented poorly (I'd guess it depends on optimaly selected
number of iterations. It seems it could be quite close to the reality.
That's just my opinion...):

Hutchinson's spline-based tool (TOPOGRID)- unrealisticaly smooth surfaces,
surface artifacts:

triangulation based NLS25, NLS10 and RasterTIN - generates artifacts and
unpleasant unrealistic surface structures, the poorest methods.

Maybe somebody knows more comparative studies on interpolation methods.
Are there other opinions on these methods or some opinions on different
methods ? Which could be the best (the closiest to reality with the same
given data set).
