'GIS' is a dead trademark:

I doubt one could trademark the three letters 'GIS' today.
Note that a trademark like 'GIS' could belong to more than one registration.
'Manifold' for instance belongs to our own CDA folks and someone making
tranmissions!
Copyrights are another issue.
