I am not sure what is the topic of your dissertation, but if it deals with
toppography, you may wish to look at these papers:
Shary, P.A., 1995. Land surface in gravity points classification by a
complete system of curvatures. Mathematical Geology Vol.27, No.3, p.373-390.
Shary, P.A., Sharaya, L.S., Mitusov, A.V., 2002. Fundamental quantitative
methods of land surface analysis. Geoderma Vol.107, No.1-2, p.1-32.
They essentially replace geostatistics and fractals by precise solutions:
for example, geostatistics in soil science uses predominantly DEMs and fails
in extrapolation, as stated in this recent overview:

T.M., 2000. An overview of pedometric techniques for use in soil survey.
