Subject: GISList: RE: [AV] ArcView 3.x versus ArcView 8.x AND MapObjects?
Date:  06/17/2002 08:57:40 PM
From:  Neil Havermale

Just a tickeler to get the last comment or two before I try to glue together
my take on the responses to my questions below. There seems to be good
agreement on the design of ArcView and its place within the larger ESRI
effort known as ArcGIS but I have a question -

How does MapObjects and MapObjects LT fit into ArcGIS?

"MapObjects LT is a collection of mapping components for application
developers, consisting of an ActiveX control (OCX) and other programmable
ActiveX automation objects. MapObjects LT is based on the same
industry-standard framework as MapObjects...."
http://www.esri.com/software/mapobjectslt/index.html

Does MapObjects use the same technology, OCXs, as ArcGIS? Do devlopers buy
into MapObjects if they want to distribute a stand alone based on ArcGIS
technolgies and its associated metadata?

I want to take a reality check and see if anyone has insight or even a
general opinion about how many of the ArcView 3.x community have shifted
from that platform to the ArcGIS/ArcView 8.x design?

Anyone have a guess as to total numbers in either camp? If you can not
venture a count do you have any insight as to an overall ratio of current
users of 3.x versus 8.x: 8:1, 4:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:4,....etc?

Is there any policy out there that directly or indirectly outlines for
estabished 3.2 shops what they can expect as regards continued support for
3.x as well as continued supply of new licenses?

I'll do a sum on thursday. No names will be provided .....

Neil
