Yes, we attempt to conform to Microsoft's standards...but the application we are developing is not notepad,word, excel type of tools...it's a geotechnical, engineering, cad type of software. Microsoft does not address spatial/geodata objects.

As a practical matter, if you would like your software to be most usable by hundreds of millions of people there is only one GUI standard: Microsoft's. Your software should use Windows GUI conventions whenever possible. Microsoft publishes a lot of material on their web sites and with their development tools (MSDN, etc.) that is very helpful.
