Subject: RE: GISList: GUI standards when using spatial / geodata
Date:  06/20/2002 08:28:47 PM
From:  David.Irving .. santos.com

It is worth looking at
http://www.iarchitect.com/mshame.htm
(for what to avoid), and
http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog0000000057.html
for a very readable guide to Best Practice.

Although both these sites are aimed more at the businaess application
programmer, you should glean something of use to you.

Regards,
David

Yes, we attempt to conform to Microsoft's standards...but the application
we
are developing is not notepad, word, excel type of tools...it's a
geotechnical, engineering, cad type of software. Microsoft does not
address
spatial/geodata objects.

As a practical matter, if you would like your software to be most usable by
hundreds of millions of people there is only one GUI standard: Microsoft's.
Your software should use Windows GUI conventions whenever possible.
Microsoft publishes a lot of material on their web sites and with their
development tools (MSDN, etc.) that is very helpful.

Cheers,

Dimitri
