Subject: RE: GISList: Definiens 'eCognition' software?
Date:  06/25/2002 01:57:51 PM
From:  Ned Horning

Mark,

I'm interested to hear what others think about this.

I recently started using eCognition after playing with the demo for a year
or so. I really like it and do think this is a very sensible way to do image
classification. Our GIS/RS lab is eligible for the education discount so the
price was reasonable. I would not pay $18k for it since all you really get
is a set of methods for image classification. The other software you mention
does a heck of a lot more than image classification for a fraction of the
price. My guess is that other venders will implement this segmentation-based
classification approach in the next couple years and then this technology
will be available for a more reasonable price.

Ned

Subject: GISList: Definiens 'eCognition' software?

Hello All,

Does anyone have any experience, thoughts, or opinions about Definiens
object-oriented image analysis software eCognition
(http://www.definiens-imaging.com/)?

A bit of a loaded question, but I am wondering if it is worth the price
($18k) relative to more traditional pixel-oriented classification software
(IMAGINE, ENVI, PCI, etc.).

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark.
