Dear all,
ECognition’s object-oriented approach is way ahead of all other image classifiers I've used and offers a new dimension of image classification. Developing reliable classification schemes (like libraries) to reapply to multiple datasets is probably what most of the remote sensing community has been dreaming of. When Erdas released their Expert Classifier I had hoped that it would solve the problems which eCognition now addresses perfectly.
We purchased eCognition more than a year ago and have successfully used it in various environmental applications. As far as I remember we paid around 2000 $ (mind you the Rand is much weaker now) for our research license. Version 2 with its vector functionality pushed our work even further forward.
I have talked to many eCognition users over the last few months and it looks like they are all pretty impressed about what the software can do for them. Definiens Imaging has a customer feedback corner on their website (http://www.definiens-imaging.com/guestbook/index.htm) for further reading.
