Subject: Re: GISList: Re: Definiens 'eCognition' software?
Date:  06/27/2002 12:30:10 PM
From:  Naris Julintron

Dear all,

I have also compared eCognition and Feature Analyst before I decided to go for eCognition.

As far as I remember eCognition was amongst the top 16 in the NIMA evaluation, wasn't it.

Comparing feature analyst and eCognition is like comparing apples and oranges. While feature analyst is simply a tool for feature extraction eCognition is actually feature extraction AND intelligent image classification. I have to admit that the eCognition learning curve can be kind of steep but it's still the most intuitive approach to image classification. I also have to admit that I haven't played with Feature Analyst recently because the first release was rather useless.

*Cost:

Feature Analyst is about half the cost of eCognition. But it only offers 20% of eCognition's functionalities. eCognition is a full image classification software whereas FA seems to be kind of a "pattern recognition" tool.

Ease-of-use: eCognition is easy and intuitive, especially for beginners. I always get the same classification result you normally get with pixel-based software within a fraction of time. The NN classifier based on sample-objects is unbeatable.

* Workflow: eCognition is stand-alone. Who cares? Import/Export of data is a piece of cake.

* Accuracy:
I don't agree. Have you really used eCognition? Actually, there is no "unsupervised classification" in eCognition. The supervised classification (Nearest neighbor classifier) is perfect. Fine-Tuning/improving the results of this first supervised classification by using your knowledge is eCognition's major advantage.

* Imagery: eCognition works very well on both Panchromatic and Multi/Hyper-spectral imagery. It's an excellent tool especially for noisy data like SAR.

Cheers, Naris
