Subject: RE: GISList: MapObjects vs MapX Mobile
Date:  07/03/2002 09:50:50 AM
From:  Neil Havermale

ArcPad is a complete application that lists for $595. Developers can add
applications into this product as plug-ins. They also have a developer's
kit that provides insight to how ArcPad is constructed as well as to how to
access its features.

MapObjects comes in two vaieties - a COM set of objects versus a Java set.
MapObjects COMs are not subsets of ArcGIS as I understand it. They predate
that design.

MapX Mobile is special MapX version that developers build their own apps
with. WHile there are examples of how to do certain things it does not
provide a finished end-user interface. Its license design suggests that you
should consider the MapX Mobile engine to cost in at $295 for one-of
licenses - list(?). As you buy more licenses you can get a better deal.
This suggests that a list application should come in around $595 as well. I
also believe dealer discount structures are also available for qualified
resellers..

MapX Mobile developer kits are indeed free from MapInfo's Test Drive area.
You only face a license fee when you decide to distribute. I do not beleive
there is a similar program for ArcPAD unless its a 30 time-out demo.

But is there any interface between Mapxmobile and ArcIMS? And is
mapxmobile for free?

Many thanks,

Maggie

I don't think so, because the embedded environment / PDA won't support
MO.
You can choose from mapxMobile from MapInfo or ArcPad from ESRI to work
with PDA
There is something from AutoDesk also on the same lines..
