I agree with Bill's recommendation to look at Numerical Recipies in C. I've also found that
source to be very useful.
You might also look at some of John Burkardt's Fortran code for ideas. He's posted a wide
variety of computational functions at his web site in both C and Fortran, including some
Eigenvalue code and general matrix computations:
