Subject: Re: GISList: GIS/SCADA
Date:  08/08/2002 06:26:53 AM
From:  Pat Waggaman

Anthony,

Marimsys is principally a small data message "machine to machine" Orbcomm=
=20
satellite data provider. Most of the traffic is transferring the position=
=20
of several hundred mobiles (ships & trucks) to their owners and in the case=
=20
of fishing vessels - to the Chilean VMS (Vessel Monitoring System).

Systems are also used to bring in data to our servers (water temp, fuel=20
flow, PH, salinity, fishing species / quality / quantity) where we then=20
rebroadcast that to other interested parties. This is a GIS system in that=
=20
it dynamically positions all mobiles on our proprietary (VB based) plotter=
=20
/ control system, and the majority of commands are emitted (and data=20
viewed) through a right button click on the mobile (or for that matter=20
stationary) icon representing the remote satellite communicator.

Either the client or we activate (from the network) various devices=20
connected to satellite communicators on the satellite WAN.

G.S. Rao in the previous posting used VSAT (minimum bandwidth 64 Kb) for=20
the Mumbai water control project, it was probably a pre-existing system to=
=20
which he could add a bit of traffic. I would bet that the same data=20
transfer could have been done with small data messages on Orbcomm rather=20
than this wide bandwidth / high cost alternative. India lacks a=20
downloading Gateway and traffic would have had to be in "store-and-forward"=
=20
mode, which would have added 1/2 to 1 hour of report delay. There are a=20
variety of methods to hyper-compress specialized SCADA / positioning / data=
=20
report traffic which bring the low-cost & small bandwidth satellite=20
communicators into many reporting / command / control applications.
