Subject: GISList: SUM: Registering non earth vector file
Date:  08/12/2002 08:12:29 AM
From:  Rock Fish

Thank to all who reponded to my qurey. Would like to Thank again:

Tadi Seetharamayya
P.V.Shyam Sunder
Christian Singer
Hussam Kamal.

-------------
Shyam Sunder gave a very good way of doing it in Autodesk MAP.

Hi Rock,

Follow the procedure as below.

1 Identify 12 control points for a area of 70 sq. km, on the non earth
vector data for which you know lat long values.

2 These 12 points should be distributed all over the data.

3 Create a new layer with name "source_points". Place 12 points at the
identified places in the step 1 above.

4 Create another layer with name "Target_points". Place 12 points with
co-ordinate "X" as latitude value Co-ordinate "Y" as longitude value in
decimal degrees.

5 Use Rubbersheet command in the Autocad Map menu. The tool will ask
you to select objects to be rubber sheeted, source and target points.

6 Select all the objects in the dwg file and give respective source
and target points. After the process, the vector data can be called as
projected in Lat longs(Geographic).

In the above creating Source and Target layer is to avoid confusion between
source points and target points. The tool does not ask for layer creation.

Please follow the above procedure to convert the non earth dwg file to
Geographic then I will explain how to use a projection system.

With best wishes,
-------------

Tadi Seetharamayya also gave a simmilar solution:

Hi Rock fish,

Yes, this can be done in AutoCAD Map and also in
Arcinfo the principle procedure of working will be the
same..

It goes like this in Arcinfo:

1. You identify a minimum of 4 control points whole
geodetic values you know on the vector layer, so that
these points covers the whole of your vector layer

2 create a empty geodetic coverage of these tics and
Project this empty from local non earth to Lat/long
wgs84

3. Now Transform your vector layer from non earth
vector file to the required geodetic projection.
(sorry it may be little confusing)

I know these is a better method in AutoCAD Map where
you can warp your local non earth vector file to the
projection require.

Just wait and watch for the AUTOCAD Map wiz's to
reply..

Good luck.

Hello Mr Fish,

you don't explicitely mention what software products you are using.
If, by chance, you have 'MapInfo Prof.' then my 'FlexibleMap' tool may be a
suitable solution. More info available at
www.icsinger.de/flxmap_e.htm

Hello,
You can do this using Autodesk Map , AutoCAD Map 4

-------------

My original question was:

Hi,

I have some non earth dwg files which I would like to registe in geodetic
WGS84. Can someone tell me how do I go about, any specific software or
anything for this.

Will sum.

thanks in advance

Rock Fish
