Subject: RE: GISList: Creating Shape files
Date:  08/12/2002 01:48:44 PM
From:  Gary Andersen

I do understand that the shape files can be created in ArcCatalog ("Using
ArcCatalog" pages 170-172 give basic instructions). I have created a simple
shape file with its associated database. However, the creation of the files
has failed to convert the points, polylines and polygons in the DWG file
into information in the shape files. In other words, all the files are 1KB
and this is a 40MEG DWG file.

Having only three months of experience with GIS, I need more in-depth
information that will take me, step-by-step, from an AutoCAD drawing of
points, polylines and polygons with their associated attributes and convert
this to shape files(*.shp, *shx, *dbf) that can be read in ArcMap.

By the way, Scott, when I right-click a DWG file in ArcCatalog I have one
choice for exporting, "CAD to Geodatabase." "Export to Shapefile" is found
under the "File/New/Export to Shapefile". In addition, I have to select a
folder rather than a single file in order to have this option. I am working
in ArcView 8.2. Are you using something other than ArcView 8.2?

Thank you again for any information.

Gary Andersen

Can someone please direct me to a tutorial, book or other source for
creating a shape file (in ArcView 8.2) and its associated database?

I understand that the ESRI book, Using ArcCatalog, has some information.
However, the instruction is limited.

Thank you,

Gary Andersen
