That's free disk space, to allow for all of the TEMP files needed to enable
users to abandon projects, undo edits, etc. That's not RAM required.

Nigel,

Manifold is not a tiling system, which is good news if you want fast
performance for data sets in the up to 2GB range and bad news if you are
working with data sets larger than 2GB.

As to why Manifold does this, see the "Using RAM and other Machine
Resources" essay (watch the line wraps!) at:

http://exchange.manifold.net/manifold/manuals/5_userman/mfd50Using_RAM_and_o
ther_Machine_Reso.htm

For memory requirements in general, including practical advice, see the
"Memory Requirements" topic in the user manual. If you haven't downloaded
SP2 or SP3 you won't have this updated topic in your Help file. Online, it
is at:

http://exchange.manifold.net/manifold/manuals/5_userman/mfd50Memory_Requirem
ents.htm

If you want to work with truly immense projects, the next update to Manifold
will allow use of unlimited size projects where any one image (they can be
tiled, of course, in a map) can be up to 4 gigabytes in size. This will be
made available for 32 bit systems later this year.

Also, for specific technical discussion on Manifold, the Manifold-L list is
a good place to get user opinions... it's a very active community.

Cheers,

Dimitri
