Subject: RE: GISList: ArcView vs MapInfo vs Manifold
Date:  08/22/2002 02:04:24 PM
From:  McCann, Michael J. (Mike)

"Let's not go overboard here in a love fest towards Manifold.

It's hard not too, there is so much to love!"

Well, I'm sure there's just as much to love - if not more, in Maptitude,
TransCAD, AutoCAD Map. etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------
"For someone who has in past posts talked about companies that waste money
on hiring
people to market GIS products, Dimitiri certainly puts in his fair share of
time with Manifold.

Well, Dimitri is the Product Manager for Manfifold, and I assume a principle
in the company that makes Manifold. I expect he would put in significant
time "time with Manfold".

Every product has a product manager, but thankfully, they don't all drone on
and on via this list about their product while at the same time chastising
companies who have sales associates or marketing campaigns.

You don't necessarily have to buy each product to do a comparison (not to
mention read each line of code...). Reading separate independent reviews
of different software products allows an interested shopper to compare notes
between different features in different software products. For example:

The examples are directly to Dimitri's point - reviews by those who sell
advertising to the product's maker. You don't see a whole lot of Manifold
reviews there do you?

So what, are you claiming there's a conspiracy out there? Give me a break.
My point is you can take several single product reviews, and as Hugo
suggested, develop a matrix of can and can't do features, price, etc.
Something where actual, independent-of-the-software-maker people (how's that
for phrase...) can contribute their experiences with whatever software they
are using would be nice.
