Hi list,
I looked for a world map, free for commercial usage. I got the one from NIMA on VMAP0 format. I need only the boundaries and the administrative subdivisions in the countries. To display the maps and interact with it, I looked some java tools from open source projects and I found ones working with ESRI shapefile format. So I converted my map from VMAP0 to shapefile using the VPF Importer from NIMA. I got a shapefile which is about 4 megs, just to draw the world and the countries.
Now this is my problem : the display of the map is too much slow. I must be able to display the world map quickly, and this with free tools only :-( Until now to interact and to display the map, I tested Geotools and OpenMap, which were good until I tested them with big data. Geotools works with shapefile. OpenMap accepts several formats : DCW, VPF, VMAP, CADRG, CIB, RPF, DTED and MapInfo.
So I would like to know :
- is it possible to get a smaller shapefile from the world with political boundaries by converting VMAP0 with other softs or by using an other source than the VMAP0 map from NIMA ?
- are there better formats than shapefile to deal with big data in general ?
I'm confused between looking for another world map in shapefile format, or chosing another format or chosing other softs to interact with my map.
Thanks a lot for your help and your advices.
Stephanie.
