Subject: Re: GISList: Code of Ethics ?
Date:  08/27/2002 04:39:20 PM
From:  viktoras d

Interesting...
but indeed:
1)who decides who is a professional and who is not?
2) this
"Call attention to unprofessional work of others. First take your concerns
to that person: if satisfaction is not gained, subsequent contacts might
include their employer, their client, their professional organization, and
the local press."
actualy is totaly un-ethical. Everybody makes mistakes. Probably this is
supposed to be a method of "dealing" with competitors...
3) too many trivial "truths" (e.g. be truthfull, work smoothly...)
4)reminds me a soviet "pioner" ethics code :-)
5)who decides what is "good" and what is "bad" ?

My concern would be- who (and why) needs that kind of code ? Are we
(everybody working with GIS) realy so "bad guys" that somebody decided to
force us (how ?) to behave ethicaly ? Or will it provide a chance to make
money for evidently non-GIS persons just from argues and conflicts among GIS
professionals ?

Addoption of this code can not do anything useful for the industry.
If a person decides not to obey certain points of this code, will there be
any institution which can force her/him to obey the code ?.. If so, let's
discuss the democracy issues... Otherwise there is no sense to have such a
code. Everybody has a conscience... Everybody knows 10 laws of the God and
I can not see a good reason for having some more as even these 10 are
already too tough for the most of us :)

this was just my opinion :)
cheers
Viktoras
