Manifold

Let me briefly provide some insights from the
editorial side.

Directions Magazine and the other ezines and
print journals that offer
editorial walk a fine line in the trade
publication business. We survive
because of advertising because we are free to
subscribers. We both want the
advertisers as well as provide readers with
accurate and useful information.

Over the recent months, I have received
"strongly-worded" objections to my
commentary by ESRI, Intergraph and others. No
one has yet threatened to pull
their advertising and so I consider that proof
of not yet violating the
bounds of the fine line.

We differentiate ourselves on content and we
will continue to compete with
trade publications that do likewise. As for
product reviews, Directions has
enlisted two universities to do "Product
Reviews" and we did this
specifically to remove any possibility of being
less than objective in our
reviews. We publish both "Product Overviews"
which briefly review features
and functions, and "Product Reviews" which
provide more in-depth analysis of
products and which undergo usability testing.

That said, we can not get to every product that
comes our way. We do not
have the staff to review everything.

Hopefully this explanation will suffice for the
time being.

Joe Francica
PS. If Dimitri wants to feel better, we have
Manifold on the list of
products to be reviewed by Univ. of
Pennsylvania-Wharton.
