Hopefully the UOP reviewers will not reflect the views I have observed held by local GIS professors and "consultants". The non-ESRI bias is astounding. If they are open to any other tools it is high end workstation software.
Part of the bias appears to be an extension of the ingrained anti-WinTel bias in academia. Part appears to be CYA when they are faced with inexpensive tools that cost less than a couple hours of consulting time trying to get the big dog GIS software to function.
For example I have demo'd Manifold to several local GIS mucky mucks and have an experienced nothing but disdain. I have even lobby with them to sign up for the Manifold academic license - they only have to buy one per campus - and none have taken up the offer as far as I can tell.
It will be interesting to see what kind of matrix these folks, who undoubtedly are in line for big dog grants to help their clients get hooked on big dog software, come up with. I challenge them to publish the matrix for feedback before they begin. ----------
This message from Joe Francica bouced to the list and should be of interest.

Let me briefly provide some insights from the editorial side.
Directions Magazine and the other ezines and print journals that offer editorial walk a fine line in the trade publication business. We survive because of advertising because we are free to subscribers. We both want the advertisers as well as provide readers with accurate and useful information.
Over the recent months, I have received "strongly-worded" objections to my commentary by ESRI, Intergraph and others. No one has yet threatened to pull their advertising and so I consider that proof of not yet violating the bounds of the fine line.
We differentiate ourselves on content and we will continue to compete with trade publications that do likewise. As for product reviews, Directions has enlisted two universities to do "Product Reviews" and we did this specifically to remove any possibility of being less than objective in our reviews. We publish both "Product Overviews" which briefly review features and functions, and "Product Reviews" which provide more in-depth analysis of products and which undergo usability testing.
That said, we can not get to every product that comes our way. We do not have the staff to review everything.
Hopefully this explanation will suffice for the time being.
Joe Francica
PS. If Dimitri wants to feel better, we have Manifold on the list of products to be reviewed by Univ. of Pennsylvania-Wharton.
