Well, I for one, barley believe that a simple redraw of an not too big image after panning that was snappy in ArcView 3.2 and is snappy in Manifold takes what, 5 or six seconds in ArcGis. Praising speed of Esri products is somewhat like praising stability in Microsoft products. Only, Microsoft improves with time while Esri keeps getting worse. If ArcGis works faster for you than ArcView did, check if you bought a faster computer in the meanwhile.
And in Manifold - maybe you didn't turn the "show window content while dragging" off, which speeds things up significantly. It is stupid that Manifold requires you to do that, but it's not that much of a sacrifice.
Like other people pointed out, this flaming is a bit pointless. But I cannot help myself biting the bone once it's thrown...
Cheers,
