I've kind of been in the markget and the Magellan Sport Trak (Pro if you can afford it) seems like a good choice. It is WAAS capable (3m) and gets very good reviews for getting good position data under difficult signal conditions.
With any GPS they usually have a DC Power/PC Data cable combo for $30-40 that is helpful.
Many of the units have companion PC software for maps.
If you are going to use them with GIS you can usually find some freeware/cheapware to down/up load points, tracks, and trails. I know that is the case with the Gramin units - WayPointPlus is a great freeware tool. Not sure what is availabel for the Magellan units.
