If you find a good solution for this requirement please post the results
here.
Detailed international boundary info is pretty hard to come by. Here is one
from the UN circa 1996 that has national boundaries in E00 format:

The UN is making some noise about International GIS but I don't see anything
useful yet:

Here is a good OpenGIS version that combines DCW data with a lot more:

He had the Blue Marble data up for a while.
