The best way I have heard GIS described is to refer to it as "geospatial database modeling". I'm not sure it clarifies things to non-gis people. However, I think it is as accurate description as I have heard and it indicates that GIS is much more than just making maps.

Dear All,
If some one posed the question "What is GIS?" what would be a typical answer.
The reason i ask is that i have a group of people to whom GIS means plotting maps. But it is truely so much more so how in a nutshell can i get this point over, in a couple of=20 sentences.
Does any one know of any breif and too the point descriptions etc.
Thanks in advance John
