Subject: RE: GISList: A quick question
Date:  11/19/2002 02:08:36 PM
From:  Vivek Mapari

Hi John:
I have encountered this question many a times when we were working on
project for general public "Demystification of Technology from Classes to
Masses" where we had GIS as one of the areas -
We tried to answer this by ONLY MENTIONING following points: (with
demonstration)
- It is a map making tool
- Maps produced can be easily modified and used for various purposes
- GIS helps in understanding an area and gives much more information at
click of mouse which is not possible in traditional maps
- GIS makes your life easier as you can locate the nearest Pizza joint with
help of GIS data or find various routes to you friends place

If you would like to really demystify the technology make it simpler and DO
NOT MENTION
- DOQ, DEM, Accuracy, Projections, Image Processing, FM, DTM, LBS, OGIS,
RIMS, LIS etc....

May be this sounds too fundamental or basic... other wise in any case so
much is there on internet.... http://www.kingston.ac.uk/geog/gis/intro.htm

HAPPY GIS DAY..... TO EVERYBODY

Cheers
Vivek

Subject: GISList: A quick question

Dear All,

If some one posed the question
"What is GIS?" what would be a typical answer.

The reason i ask is that i have a group of people
to whom GIS means plotting maps. But it is truely so much more
so how in a nutshell can i get this point over, in a couple of
sentences.

Does any one know of any breif and too the point descriptions etc.

Thanks in advance
John
