As a water and wastewater utility developing a GIS to support maintenance m= anagement (work order system), we are studying methods for assigning IDs to= all of our infrastructure assets (pipes, valves, manholes, meters, etc.). = Our users have decreed that whatever system we come up with must be simple= enough to be annotated on a paper municipal basemap at 1:2400, yet intuiti= ve to even the lowest ranking field crew leader. I'm hoping to get some fe= edback how other similar utilities have designed asset ID systems for GIS. = Have you used grid-based IDs? Do you incorporate feature type codes into = alphanumeric IDs? Do you use sequential numbering or do you have rule-base= d assignment? Anything you particularly like or dislike about your current= asset ID schema? We have the luxury of starting from scratch so if you ha= ve a system that works well or especially if you have encountered problems,= I'd like to hear your experiences.
