Hello. I am a recent subscriber to this list.
My name is Stephen Brown. I am in the early development stages of a multi-stage business endeavor, working to bring a new type of GPS Receiver to the high-end consumer market, and also, perhaps, to the commercial market.
The final product(s) will take the form of a gps receiver that can handle multiple map-data formats and a subscriber-based website that will allow the secure storage and manipulation of individual GIS data. The GIS data from the website will be instantly compatible with the GPS Receiver, and will be available for download, both to the GPS Receiver from the website, and to the website from the GPS Receiver. Both sets of GIS data--the Receiver's and the website's--will manipulatable by the user.
What I am needing at this juncture, are recommendations for the support of the various mapping formats that are available. As I am what I consider a "well-informed layman," but not a die-hard (yet) technician, obtaining feedback from active developers in the GIS field is of paramount importance at this stage of the project(s) development.
Below is a brief list of what I feel I need suggestions on:
1. What map-data formats should be supported. [Vector-based formats for certain, mainly due to the compressibility and the ability of vector-based formats to be used for auto-routing, turn-by-turn vehicle navigation, something I intend to implement as a standard feature.]
2. What Operating System should be used for the GPS Receiver. [Currently, I am focusing on the Windows CE/Pocket PC 2002, and Embedded Linux (such as Embedix) as choices. The utilization of Linux would, of course, allow for a completely open-sourced solution. The use of Pocket PC 2002/Windows CE would allow for a more currently-in-use, commercial solution most everyone is famliar with.]
3. What data-sets are recommended. [Everyone is familiar with the NAVTECH data. I'm interested to know of any more that are reasonably thorough in their presentation, but also in their updates. To me, the more updates the better. Being able to apply updates from a manufacturer's website would be a plus.]
4. What types of image-over-data or data-over-image schems would be effective in a handheld GPS unit of this type. [XML seems to be a format that can be utilized to compress both images and other data effectively. Would XML be viable in a handheld unit? Or too slow? What other compressed--or non-compressed--formats could be used that would be reasonably fast at rendering, redrawing, and displaying?

I think this is enough for the time being. I thank all who reply in advance for their suggestions.
Best regards, Stephen Brown
