Subject: GISList: Visualisation - summary

Dear all,

I recently asked a question about visualisation of Ordnance Survey
data.
First of all a big thank you to all those who replied: Robert Lega,
Robert
Heitzman, Kevin Ball, Telmo Pina Nunes, David Nealey, Andrew Hoppin,
Volker
Mell, Ivan Lucena and Graeme Brooke: respect to all of you.

I started off using Arcscene, because that’s what I had on my desk. At
the
time of posting the email I had only just started to use the software,
so I
certainly hadn’t explored its full capabilities. It seems easy to use
but
there are doubts about its export module, its speed for fly-through
generation and its rendering.

Someone said that a graphics card is never able to handle complex
geographical data and what is needed is data conversion into a
visualisation-specific format such as OpenFlight (.FLT) or Tiled Scene
Graph
which rearrange the priorities to allow visualisation rather than
analytical
aspects to come to the fore. Alternatively, I could reduce the
resolution
of the data, especially if I don’t have a whiz-bang, super fast
computer.

Lots of people suggested other visualisation products, some free, some
not:
here is a list of these and their web sites:

Microdem free at:
http://www.usna.edu/Users/oceano/pguth/website/microdem.htm
John Childs page at http://www.terrainmap.com/
CommunityVIZ at http://www.communityviz.com/
3DEM low cost at: http://www.visualizationsoftware.com/3dem.html
Vue d'esprit or Terragen
Other software houses at http://www.3dlinks.com/software_landscape.cfm
World Construction Set at http://www.3dnature.com

Original request:

I would like some advice please.

I want to visualise some 3D terrain models. This is likely to include
some
rotation, zooming in, development of fly-throughs and later, addition
of
textures to make the scenes more 'life-like'. I have built the DEM
from UK
Ordnance Survey (the UK's national mapping organisation) data and I
have
draped raster files over the top (several big TIF files).

Currently I am using ArcScene to enable my visualisation, but there seem
to
be limits to the program. Part of the problem is that my graphics card
is
unable to cope with the data volumes, but the process of developing
fly-throughs seems to be quite long-winded (export of individual scenes
to
another software package etc.) and adding textures is, as far as know,
impossible.

I am limited to using ArcGIS for our GIS processing, but we have some
money
available to buy visualisation software. Does anybody have any
thoughts,
experiences, comments on visulisation software of GIS data.

Seasons greetings to everyone.

John Lee

Hello !!!

The Truth suffers from too much analysis.

What the World really needs is more love/work and less paperwork.
