Hi-
[NAME] = [STATE_NAME] is a Boolean test with a result of -1 for matching values and 0 for different values.

Thanks to David Bennett and Steven Williams for the solution of copying a field. My mistake was in the syntax. All I had to do was select or type [STATE_NAME] instead of [NAME] = [STATE_NAME]. That was a quick solution! Thanks again.

Original question: How do you copy a field in ArcGIS? I have a table with a field called "STATE_NAME" (text format with state names). I want to make a copy of this field with the field name "Name". I added a new field (text type) to the table, then used the Calculate Values in the context menu with this command: [NAME] = [STATE_NAME], but the field gets only populated with either -1 or zeros. Does this not work with text or what is the correct syntax?
