Subject: RE: GISList: historical (colonial US period, WWII battles, Civil War) GIS layers
Date:  01/20/2003 08:21:54 PM
From:  John D. Evans

Hello,

This thread reminded me of two very fun map collections online:

1. The Library of Congress has historical maps online, "powered" by LizardTech:
http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/map.html

2. UNH has a repository of old USGS maps:
http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm

The second set of maps is especially interesting for GIS as it provides
comprehensive coverage and precise georeferencing (though in projections
that no-one uses anymore). However the first set may be a better source
for maps of particular historical events (esp. ones that predate the USGS :-).
