Well articulated Jonathan.
I, too, am an infrequent participant to this list (although I read every post), and in my humble opinion, the occasional flame does not detract from a list such as this. Hell - if the Grime site was built on only favourable responses, nothing would ever have happened.
I don't wish to be overly patriarchal but everyone has an axe to grind and all of us need to make a dollar. Given all that, every now and then, we may come across an obstacle that we can't surmount without help. In the GIS space, one tool that we can use to help us is this List. If, in solving our problem, respondents suggest a tool or course of action that is different to the thinking of other "listees", that is the nature of the list. If someone's passion is aroused, that is the nature of the list. If there is disagreement on a certain topic, that is the nature of the list. If there is agreement... well, you know what I'm saying.
This is a great list and we have a great industry. If personalities arise, we should greet them with open arms. Everyone of us works at GIS and the allied disciplines to make money. That is not a bad thing - that is a fact. If someone "pushes" a certain package then and there are individuals that believe that that package is good/works/is adequate/is not appropriate/sucks then this is the ideal forum to vent those feelings.
I have a list of 3048 "sayings" that I use as signatures. More often than not, the arbitrary signature that is presented is appropriate. This case is no exception. See Quote 2052 below...
Ciao, Graeme

Anthony I don't participate in GIS-L very often. But it would be a real shame if you did leave the list because of the flaming. Without being patronising I find your posts interesting - also you actually bother to contribute a lot rather than just popping up to trash people. It's a bit of a sign of the times that courtesy, manners and value for other people's opinions get thrown in the rubbish bin.
Yes sometimes Dimitri might be a bit over zealous, but hell you all have a delete key - use it if you don't want his opinions. It can be found in several places on the keyboard - I'll happily supply diagrams if anyone needs them.
Anyway gotta go as I have a presentation to prepare on developments in the GIS software market in the last year to prepare. Hell I might even mention Manifold :->
Cheers
Jon.

Sitting here in this business center in New Delhi, it has been painful and excruciatingly slow to read all these recent antagonisms. At first, I was a bit envious I hadn't been able to join in, but as I read them in order, I was pretty dismayed. Granted, I'm usually one of the agitators, but a select few have sunk to new levels on this thread. When I get back to the office I'll be disengaging from this list and unsubscribing. Best to All,
Anthony
