Subject: GISList: Surfer question
Date:  01/30/2003 03:11:25 PM
From:  Rick Gray

Hi list,

I posted a question to the list a few days ago but never saw it and
never got a response. I will rephrase and expand on it.

I am experimenting with Surfer from Golden Software (I have not found
a surfer-l to ask this question on). I have used it for interpolation
of data quite a bit and like its versatility. I have never gone
beyond the simple interpolation stage. Here is my problem:

I have very detailed, township-level maps, water bodies, roads, etc.
all in Shapefile format. I need to interpolate my point data but only
show the results over the land portion of specified counties. I
understand that in Surfer you use a "blanking" file to cover the part
of the interpolated map you do not want to see. How do I generate the
appropriate blanking maps at the appropriate scales? When I import
the different shapefiles directly, they do not align properly. I want
to create a map with water as solid blue, township boundaries as
black lines, etc. and the interpolated data in the "background".

I suspect this is something simple that I have overlooked in the on-
line help. Are there any Surfer gurus out there that can advise me?

Eventually I need to automate this process to read the data from a
database, generate the maps, then export jpg's to a file where they
can be posted to the web. But first I have to build a prototype
before I can fly the real thing.

Thanks
rg
