Subject: Re: GISList: Manifold 5.x vs. ArcGIS 8.x

Like the Manifold review done by a PA University professor that, from the
point of view of someone who knows Manifold, was inaccurate in places?

IMHO GIS Priesthood membership should not be required for one to review
software from their own standpoint. The reviewer’s standpoint was disclosed
as I remember.

ditto the comment on the PA Professor's review. He obvious didn't understand
portions of Manifold and evidentially didn't ask. So we should weight his
review, even if incorrect, over someone outside the priesthood?

I guess this is good news for us who love Manifold - its name doesn't even
have to be mentioned to be recognized - great! I've always noticed the
Dimitri has gone to great lengths to not mention Manifold as a specific
example of the points he tries to make. Manifold.net has a pretty unique GIS
worldview - more power to them!

Oh come now.

The comparisons you refer to are from:
http://www.manifold.net/news/news_set.html
under a link "Comments on Manifold Products". These are clearly user
testimonials and not passed off as professional comparisons by members of
the GIS priesthood. - but they do appear to be more accurate!

No problem.

Disclosure - I guess I am a member of a GIS cult that is assaulting the GIS
priesthood. I too am new to GIS but have been in the computer industry
writing and testing software for over twenty years. I broke into GIS as a
lowly hobbyist / amateur so nothing I say I'm sure has any validity in your
eyes. But from my depth of experience in evaluating software of all kinds I
must say that after surveying the available software Manifold stands head
and shoulders above any other general purpose GIS tool I looked at -
especially when economics are considered. It is also the best integrated
with the Wintel environment IMO. Certainly it will never(at least not soon)
replace any of the big dogs in huge government shops with deep pockets. But
there is a huge pent up demand for GIS that Manifold is prefect for.
