Dear Colleagues,
I must confess that I am a lurker on this list, but has benefitted tremendously from the discussions and would clearly like to see the ideas and discussions flowing freely again.
I also agree that some GIS products have been given more list-play than ought to be. But how can you reasonable separate the GIS product from discussions about the technology? I am by no means defending the potential to use a shared list for individual gains.
To resolve the impasse I draw on ideas from Habermas Theory of Communicative Rationality. One of the defining points of this theory is that the value of an argument is based on the facts and information that is articulated in its support or defence. Through deliberations the strength of weakness of an argument emerges.
By keeping in mind that the foremost aim of the list is to promote discussions about GIS and related spatial technologies (my understanding of the list..), then no matter what software is constantly being referring to, if an argument is strong and valid from a GIS technology perspective then the software, regardless of how often it is referred to, should be immaterial.
cheers, GeoCognition.
