Subject: GISList: RE: GPS and powerline question
Date:  02/18/2003 01:41:07 PM
From:  Randy Edwards

Regarding the question of GPS and powerlines, we have a lot of experience s=
urveying near and around high-tension powerlines, and haven't noticed degra=
ded GPS performance (note - we are typically doing large area environmental=
assessments (ie: centimeter accuracy not needed!)). I've only noticed pro=
blems when surveying right near the base of large towers, where the tower i=
tself physically shadows a satellite or two - a large tree could do the sam=
e thing!

For more formal information, this, according to the Electric Power Research=
Institute (EPRI):

Electromagnetic Compatibility of Power Lines and GPS receivers

The global positioning system (GPS) is a satellite-based radionavigation sy=
stem that has many new civilian applications for the position, velocity, an=
d time information it can provide. As GPS use expands, it becomes more impo=
rtant to evaluate any potential sources of interference. One issue that is =
sometimes raised is the potential for degraded perfomance of GPS receivers =
when they are used near electric power facilities. of specific interst is t=
he use of the GPS satellite-based microwave signals under or near power lin=
e conductors. With support from EPRI, Prof Olsen has been studying the poss=
ibility of this interference. It has been shown unlikely that power line co=
nsuctors will interfere with use of the GPS satellite signals. (for more in=
formation please contact: olsen@eecs.wsu.edu.)=20

Look for the word 'GPS' on the web page http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/power/resea=
rch.html as a source.

Hope this helps!

I emailed the Trimble support and Thales Navigation about this issue and on=
e of Trimble's reps called me and gave an affirmative to whether or not the=
elctromagnetic field around powerlines affects GPS recievers. He said one =
solution would be to use "offset points". I haven't heard back from Thales =
Navigation.
