Anthony,
I have experienced similar problems with both companies. I have found
it's best to deal with requests over the phone and to only use the online
stores for searching their archive photography.
As far as availability and scheduling goes it depends on what part of the
world you are trying to acquire images for, there are several factors that
can play a part in this including weather (rainy seasons) and the current
situation in Iraq. I agree that there needs to be more competition and
reliable companies who offer this service. As far as the costs involved it
depends on what type of resolution and accuracy you are looking for, the
smaller the pixel and greater the accuracy the more it will cost you. In
conclusion, I have been pleased with the quality and accuracy of the images
I have acquired from both of these companies but it took entirely too long
to obtain them. Good luck to you!

I'm curious about other's experience with the major imagery providers,
namely Space Imaging (IKONOS) and Digital Globe (QuickBird), but not
exclusive to those two. I've recently made some requests through their
respective online "stores" for GIS-ready imagery, and the results are less
than impressive. Neither vendor responded with more than an automated
email
saying the request has been received and someone someday will get in touch
with me to provide a quote and a delivery schedule.

In my conversations with others over the past 12 months, similar feedback
has lead me to conclude that:

A) the satellite imagery market (<=1m) needs more competition (ie. More
birds in the air capturing more imagery, cheaper prices, on-demand
delivery)
B) neither vendor is really capable of handling the current demand (outside
of CNN, NIMA & Survivor addicts)
C) There is little point of having an "online store" if the order
fulfillment process is slow, unresponsive and confusing.
D) Exclusive distributors/resellers of various national imagery products is
a old, counter-productive sales model that has artificially creates
obstacles for imagery consumption.

To their credit, these companies have gone out and pushed the envelope in a
market that was uncertain in pre-IKONOS times, but enough time has passed
and enough latent demand exists to call on them and other industry members
to fill the pipeline, make the imagery acquisition process easier, cheaper
and faster. Is this a minority view of list readers?

Anthony
